WAP, Wireless Access Point

WAP, Wireless Access Point
A WAP has the ability to relay information between both wired and wireless devices. More than one WAP can be connected in order to form a larger network that permits roaming. Unlike a network where client devices are self-managed, a WAP includes IP addresses that enable configuration. A single WAP generally has the ability to communicate with up to 30 client computers located within a 100 mile radius. While this is convenient, the range of communication may vary tremendously. This all depends on a number of variables as areas indoors, outside, high above ground, near obstructing objects, or other devices may interfere with the signal. A network designer can extend a WAP’s range by using reflectors and repeaters, two mechanisms that accordingly redirect signals that normally wouldn’t be received. In most cases, a WAP will use different frequencies to communicate with clients in order to elude interference between two systems that are nearby.
