Terms that start with R

An undesirable condition that results when a system attempts to simultaneously perform multiple operations. It typically occurs when a system attempts to perform functions out of the intended sequence.
Race Condition
A vital part of keeping end-users current with the latest security threats. They are created whenever a security vendor receives a new virus sample.
Rapid Release Virus Definitions
A protocol that enables a machine to learn it’s IP address from a gateway server. It is an extension of Address Resolution Protocol.
RARP, Reverse Address Resolution Protocol
A method of regulating access based on the user’s role in the organization. It may be applied to computer files or network resources.
RBAC, Role Based Access Control
A centralized repository of a computer. It stores numerous files related to devices, programs and the operating system itself.
Registry
The ability to access a machine or system from a remote location. This can be done without authority or visual observation
Remote Access
A program used to control other computers from a distance. The computer may be controlled by a system administrator or at the request of a user.
Remote Control Software
An authentication protocol that prevents the replay of prior communication. This is done to reduce the damage that may be caused by repeat messages.
Replay Prevention
A process of data sharing that ensures consistency between redundant resources. It’s purpose is to improve reliability and accessibility.
Replication
A denial of service condition. It occurs when resources needed to perform a specific action are entirely consumed.
Resource Exhaustion
The act dissembling an object to learn how it functions in order to enhance it. It may also refer to duplicating an object.
Reverse Engineering
A proxy server installed within the proximity of one or more servers. It is often used for load balancing a bundle of servers.
Reverse Proxy
Documents that represent a series of memoranda. Its purpose is to encompass new research and innovations that are applicable to internet technology.
RFC, Request For Comments
A protocol used for managing router data within a contained network. It is mostly used in corporate LANs.
RIP
The probability of being severely impacted by a threat. In the field of computing, it relates to a virus or security threat.
Risk
A malicious program designed to seize control of a system. Access is gained without authorization from the original user
Rootkit
A method used to prevent routing loops. It is used to inform routers that another route is not available.
Route Poisoning
A device or computer program that determines where a packet should be forwarded next in a network. A router is typically connected to two or more networks.
Router
A type of network failure. It occurs when data packets are routed in an endless circle instead of reaching their destination.
Routing Loop
A standard set for sending serial binary data signals. It is most commonly used in the serial ports of personal computers.
RS-232 Standard
A standard method of encryption. It is currently the most commonly used algorithm on the web.
