ProtocolProtocol In IT (Information Technology), protocol is defined as a special set of rules used by end points in order to communicate. It exists at many different levels in a telecommunication connection. For instance, there is protocol used for exchanging data at the device level and protocol for exchanging data at the software level. It is often described as an industry, national, or international standard.
In regard to internet technology, several TCP/IP protocols exist, including the following:
TCP (Transfer Control Protocol) - a set of standards that exchanges messages with other internet points at the data packet level
IP (Internet Protocol) - a set of standards that sends and receives messages at the IP (Internet Provider) address level
HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) - a set of standards used with corresponding programs and locations throughout the internet
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) - a set of standards for uploading data from a hard drive to a web server |
