PPP

PPP
: Point-to-Point Protocol or PPP, can be used on several types of media including twisted paired wires, fiber optic lines or satellite devices. It utilizes a form of HDLC (High Speed Data Link Control) to encapsulate packets. For instance, an Internet Service Provider may supply a user with a PPP connection, allowing their server to respond to a user’s request, pass it along to the web, and return a response back to the user. PPP is essentially the process that packages the TCP/IP packets of a computer and forwards them to a server. From there the packets can be placed on the internet. Point-to-Point Protocol is usually preferred over older standards such as SLIP (Serial Line Internet Protocol). This is mainly because it has the ability to manage both synchronous and asynchronous communication. PPP also has the ability to share a single line with multiple users and contains error detection features not found in SLIP. When the choice is available, PPP is a much more reliable protocol.
