Port ScanPort Scan The port scan is a popular exploit used by computer hackers. It works by forwarding messages to each port on a computer, one by one. The response it receives indicates whether the port is currently being used and if it is able to be probed for vulnerability.
The most common types of port scans include the following:
The Stealth scan - numerous scanning techniques that attempt to prevent a user’s request for connection.
The Vanilla scan - a strategy used to connect to every port on a computer - all 65,536 ports.
The Strobe Scan - a scanning technique used to connected to specific ports, usually no more than 20.
FTP Bounce Scan - scanning attempts directed through an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) server. This is done to disguise a hacker’s location.
Fragmented Packet Scan - a scanning technique that sends packet fragments capable of penetrating through the packet filter of a firewall.
UDP Scan - a technique used to look for open UDP (User Datagram Protocol) ports.
Sweep Scan - a strategy used to scan the same port on multiple computers. |
