POP3POP3 POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3) is the most recent standard for receiving mail on the internet. A user or a email receiving program acts as the client while the POP3 box acts as the server and allows the message to be downloaded. This protocol comes included with some of the most popular email clients such as Outlook, Outlook Express and Eudora. It is also built into web browsers provided by Netscape and Microsoft.
POP3 is a protocol that deletes mail on the server as soon as it has been downloaded by a user. On the other hand, some implementations allow a user or administrator to save mail for a given amount of time.
An alternative protocol to POP3 is called IMAP (Internet Message Protocol). IMAP offers more capability for retaining and organizing messages on the server. While they both support the receiving of email, POP3 and IMAP are not to be confused with SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol). SMTP simply allows a user to send messages and a mail handler receives it on behalf of the recipient. POP3 or IMAP is the protocol used to read the mail. |
