PingPing Packet Inter-Network Groper, or ping, is defined as the act of using a ping command or utility. As it relates to the internet, pinging will determine if a user will be able to connect or transfer files to a particular website. A ping can also determine how long it takes for that particular server to respond to a request. When using ping, the IP address may be revealed in numbers by indicating its symbolic domain.
Loosely speaking, a ping may refer to getting the attention of, or checking for the presence of a party or location online. It functions by sending signal packets to a designated IP address and waiting for it to respond.
The term may also refer to the act of sending email to all members of a specific mailing list. This would be done prior to distributing messages in order to verify that all addresses are valid. |
