Network TAPNetwork TAP A network TAP may be implemented to monitor network traffic in between two points. A network TAP is usually the best way to monitor traffic if the network between point A and point B consists of a physical cable.
A network TAP consists of at least three ports: Port A, Port B and the Monitor port. The TAP travels with all traffic between points A and B, allowing those to points to believe that they are still only connected to each other. However, the network TAP copies the traffic between points A and B to it’s monitor port, allowing another party to listen.
Network TAPs are frequently used in network intrusion detection systems, packet sniffers and many other programs and devices that require involvement with the network segment. TAPs are effective in security programs because they are non-detectable on a network and will typically pass through traffic even if the device happens to lose power. |
