Multicast

Multicast
A multicast may also refer to an IP multicast. In this regard, it is a technique used for one individual to interact with others over an IP infrastructure. It is able to reach a large population of receivers because of it does not need to know how many receivers are present. A multicast requires the sources to transmit a single packet, even if it is intended to be sent to a multitude of receivers. Nodes in the infrastructure replicate the packet and allow it to reach the necessary receivers. A multicast operates through wireless data made possible by the CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data) technology. It can also be used for programming on the Mbone. This system allows a user to receive live audio and video feeds on the web, regardless of high bandwidth points. The Mbone multicast also uses a protocol that allows encapsulation of signals to TCP/IP packets when passing through areas of the web that are not able to directly handle multicast protocol.
