Multi-homed

Multi-homed
A computer that runs a server with multiple IP addresses may be referred to as multi-homed. This allows it to act as an IP router as well. Multi-homing uses SCTP (Stream Control Transmission Protocol), which allows a single end point to support numerous IP addresses. This means that a session is more apt to survive a network crash. In a single-homed session, network failure can isolate end points or cause the transport process to be temporarily unavailable. In order to prevent network failures, the following measures can be taken: use an address with a different prefix to invoke routing through a different carrier or the use of redundant core networks. Multi-homing enables redundant networks such a LAN (local area network) to be used for local access. It is often used in many different areas of web management and data security for redundancy checks, load balancing and disaster recovery plans.
