ModemModem The term modem is short for modulator-demodulator. It is a unit that converts digital signals from a PC into special frequencies that travel over a phone or cable television connection. Upon reaching the destination, frequencies are them sent back in digital form to prompt the intended action. Modems are typically used to communicate with a network, such as the internet.
Modems have many different functions. A lesser known version is satellite called a sat modem. This unit converts digital signals into radio waves in order to communicate with a satellite dish. This often involves built-in latency variables and can be much more expensive than connections offered by a basic Internet Service Provider.
Though most high-speed and DSL cable TV providers offer a modem for internet service, users are recommended to purchase or provide their own units. A user can find modems compatible with a specific service provider by referring to various online manuals. |
