Misleading Applications

Misleading Applications
Misleading applications are designed to intentionally misrepresent the status of an operating system. They attempt to persuade a user into removing potentially hazardous content from their computer. In many instances, a misleading application will prevent the user from removing or repairing the supposed issue until purchasing and installing a specific software solution. They often appear to be legitimate, mostly in the form of a security or anti-virus program. They may also contain corresponding web sites, a list of attractive features, and testimonials from satisfied users. Misleading applications mostly strike when an individual is browsing the internet. They are not prone to a particular website, but are often found on pornographic sites, as well as social networking platforms such as blogs, forums, and chat rooms. Misleading applications can also slither into a banner ad run on an official website. The intent here is to trick a web surfer into clicking the banner - this will execute installation of the program.
