MAC Address

MAC Address
A MAC (Media Access Control) address is a unique identifier that is attached to most network adapters. In general, it is a number that acts as the name for a specific network adapter. This means that the network cards or internal network adapters for two different machines will have two different names, or MAC addresses. Unlike an IP address, a MAC address is not divided into sections for a particular host or network. Because of this, one host can’t determine the MAC address of another host even if they are on the same layer 2 network. ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) is widely used to convert an address of a layer 3 protocol such as IP (Internet Protocol), to the MAC address on layer 2. On an Ethernet network, a MAC address allows each host and it’s frames to be uniquely marked and identified. Therefore, it forms the basis for layer 2 networking in which higher layer protocols are built.
