Terms that start with M

An address that uniquely identifies a network device address. Often called an EHA (Ethernet Hardware Address).
MAC Address
A data communication protocol sub-layer. It resides in between the Logical Link Control sub-layer and the physical layer of the network.
MAC, Media Access Control
A set of keystrokes and commands that are saved, stored, and given a special keycode. Recording of these commands enable playback
Macro
A macro procedure of executing commands. In this instance, key codes are assigned to represent a set of instructions
Macro Key
A program or segmented code scripted into the macro language of a program. It can either replicate or spread infections
Macro Virus
describes any code that has been added, modified or removed from a file or program in order to inflict damage. Numerous infections may be classified as malicious code.
Malicious Code
A program designed to penetrate or inflict damage on a computer. Activity takes place without knowledge of the original user and is known to have severe effects
Malware
a messaging interface that provides sending, receiving and storage. Simple MAPI consists of some of these functions - extended MAPI consists of all of these functions.
MAPI
The MBR is located in the first sector of a computer’s hard drive. It identifies active partitions and initiates the boot program
Master Boot Record, MBR
A one-way hash function that converts a data string into a fixed-length value. Each string will have its own unique value
MD5
A database type that manages items in a network. It originates from the OSI/ISO central network model
MIB
Software that acts as the glue for two adjoining applications. Typical middleware allows software written for access to a specific database to access other databases.
Middleware
a protocol used to transmit various file formats on the web. These formats are known as MIME types.
MIME
Applications that report false information regarding security threats. The results are typically generated following a scan
Misleading Applications
A basic console used for managing applications. Applications are compatible with other MMC modules that add functionality to the process
MMC, Microsoft, Management Console
Software transferred from a host to client computer. Examples include infections such as a worm or Trojan
Mobile Code
This device permits a computer to transmit data over a telephone line. It has the ability to transmit different speeds or transfer rates
Modem
A separate unit of an application or hardware. A module can be an executable component on a server or security application
Module
One of the first internet worms. It was mistakenly introduced and distributed on the ARPANET network.
Morris Worm
a standard technology designed for the management of network traffic. It is mostly used to increase the speed of traffic flow.
MPLS, Multiprotocol Label Switching
Description of a computer directly connected to multiple IP addresses. The computer can be connect to multiple links within the subnetwork or different networks.
Multi-homed
Communication on a network between a sender and multiple recipients. It is most commonly used to update mobile personnel or to issue online news publications
