LAN
A local area network, more commonly known as a LAN, represents multiple computers that are connected together in a home or office building using either advanced programs or hardware. A LAN is the exact opposite of a WAN (wide area network), such as the World Wide Web. This network allows the sharing of files, system resources, and even an online connection.
A LAN is classified as either wired or wireless. When wired, it requires an Ethernet cable in order to be physically connected to all machines within the network. The cable connects the computers to a central unit known as the switch. A wireless LAN relies on radio ways to communicate.
A LAN is extremely useful in both the home and business environment. It saves users money on resources by allowing them to access a single printer or server. This makes administering a network simple, while encouraging a combination of flexibility and innovation to important or recreational projects.
