Forward LookupForward Lookup A forward lookup is essentially the opposite of a reverse DNS (Domain Name System) lookup which uses an IP address to locate an internet domain name. When a user enters the address for a website on a browser, the address is forwarded to a nearby router that performs a DNS lookup by searching a routing table to find the specific IP address.
A forward lookup is a more commonly used method because most users tend to think in terms of an internet domain name opposed to an IP address. On the other hand, you may find a web page that contains a URL where the domain is represented as an IP address.
An internet facility that allows a user to perform either a forward or reverse DNS lookup is known as a NS (Name System) lookup. Software that enables this action comes available in many operating systems and can also be downloaded and installed onto a computer. |
