FAT32FAT32 FAT32 is a system frequently used in earlier versions of Windows - it was the default operating system for Windows 98 and Windows ME. It can also be installed on the Windows 2000 system for the Professional and Server editions, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.
FAT32 was introduced by Microsoft to counter capacity issues related to FAT16. This was done to allow real-mode code on DOS to mange format without limiting the amount of available memory. The max size of content on an FAT32 system is 4 GB minus 1 byte of capacity. Applications such as photo editing and video capturing software may exceed this standard. Larger files require a stronger format such as HFS+ or the widely used NTFS.
There are some disadvantages to using FAT32 as well. It will not allow compression using disk space and is not compatible with older disk management programs, motherboards, and system BIOS. Depending on the disk size, it may actually run somewhat slower that FAT16. |
