Terms that start with F

A mistake made by a biometric security system. Often called a type II error.
False Acceptance
This also known as a false positive. It is the improper detection of a virus in reference to a clean file.
False Alarm
Acronym for file allocation table. It is found in the master boot sector of a bootable medium such as a hard or floppy drive
FAT
This is a 32-bit extension of FAT. It typically caters to larger disk drives and complex file names
FAT32
A standard markup language. It is often used as an alternative to XML.
FI, Fast Infoset
The type of virus that attaches itself to a file. It prefers to append itself to a file and overwrite the program code.
File Infector
A program that specifies the host of an email domain. It was initially designed as a Unix-based application.
Finger
Carries many characteristics of a DDOS attack. Its intent is to deny access to or disable a target system
Flooder Denial Of Service (FDOS)
An attack intended to cause failure in a system. It does this by distributing more input than the system can handle.
Flooding
An attack that enables a running process to create other processes on a computer. It does this by creating copies of the original process.
Fork Bomb
The act of using a domain name to locate an IP address. Often referred to as a DNS lookup.
Forward Lookup
The complete domain name for a particular host. It combines the hostname with an internet domain name.
FQDN, Fully Qualified Domain Name
An instance in which storage space is used inefficiently. It also denotes wasted space.
Fragmentation
Data transmitted between network points. It is usually transmitted bit by bit.
Frame
It is short for File Transfer Protocol. FTP is the standard method of transferring files from a hard drive to a server.
FTP
A transmission system that simultaneously allows communication in both directions. It is also called a double-duplex.
Full-duplex
A special technique used to test software. It is often called regression testing.
