Egress Filtering

Egress Filtering
Egress filtering is a method that prevents hackers from using a computer and it’s resources to initiate strikes such as DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) Attacks on other machines. It works by monitoring and thoroughly evaluating packets that travel from an internal network to an external network by way of a router. In general, Egress filtering is a procedure that helps to ensure that unauthorized traffic never leaves an internal network. Initial default settings in a corporate network would block the egress of all packets and only permit outgoing web traffic from particular servers. A user workstation would then need to be configured to use with components such as a web proxy or a central mail server. Egress filtering is essentially a firewall function that requires configurations to be made in order for internet access to be granted. For this reason, it is an uncommon feature in consumer-based and smaller corporate networks.
