DSS, Digital Signature Standard

DSS, Digital Signature Standard
DSS works as a pair of robust numbers computed according to the specific algorithm within set parameters. These numbers allow the authentication of a signature and ensure the integrity of the data attached. Digital signatures are generated and verified through the Digital Signature Standard. For signatures generated in conjunction with a private key, authentication occurs in reference with a corresponding public key. All signatories are equipped with both an assumed general public key, and a private key. The public key is allowed to be used by anyone looking to verify the signature. SHS (Secure Hash Standard) is a function that creates a data summary of information known as a message digest. The data summary is combined with the DSS algorithm to generate the digital signature distributed with the message. The same hash function is used when verifying signatures. DSS was announced as the U.S. government standard for authenticating electronic data in 1994 by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
