DialerDialer In modern times, a dialer has been frequently used to connect without authorization from the original user, often to commit fraud. These providers often seek out vulnerabilities in system security, manipulating a user’s computer to dial up through their portal and turn a profit for themselves. Some will promise a user special incentives, items that can only be redeemed through that provider. This may include downloadable software, such as illegal music and freeware packaged with malicious code.
The dialer problem usually does not affect individuals using a DSL or high-speed modem. Though it can still be downloaded and installed, the actual process is obsolete because these modems do not need to access regular phone numbers. On the other hand, if an internal modem has been installed, a dialer may be able to establish a connection.
Malicious intent can be characterized by the following traits: pop-up windows that generate when a web page is opened, if a download proceeds even after clicking the cancel button, or if it is able to connect without interaction from the original user. |
