Computer NetworkComputer Network Computer networks may be classified under the layer in which they function in accordance to traditional reference models such as the seven-layer OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model and the four-layer Internet Protocol Suite model.
Common types of computer networks:
PAN - A personal area network may be wired with computer buses such as FireWire or USB technology. A WPAN (wireless personal area network) can be made possible with technologies such as Bluetooth and IrDA.
LAN - A local area network may consist of computers in small areas such as a home residence, office or building. Most LANs are based on Ethernet technology such as a school that uses a wireless connections so that local devices can share access to the web.
WAN - A wide area network provides service over a broad geographic area such as from one country to another. It often uses transmission facilities provided by a common carry such as a telephone company.
MAN - A metropolitan area network connects two or more LANs together yet doesn’t extend service beyond boundaries of the metropolitan area. |
