Terms that start with B

A malicious application that grants access to another computer. Control of the computer may also be compromised remotely.
Backdoor
An approach first used by Microsoft to optimize a virus check. Since all files are not checked, the program’s workload is drastically reduced.
Background Scanning
proportional to the data speed or the amount of data being transferred. The data is often measured in bps (bits per second)
Bandwidth
Information that is displayed when a user connects to remote system. Mostly activated by web developers and administrators.
Banner
An advertisement found on a website. It is usually scripted in HTML or dynamic web language.
Banner Ad
A standard web-based authentication scheme. It works by sending a username and password for each request.
Basis Access Authentication
A text file on Microsoft compatible systems. It contains various commands that are to be executed by the system’s interpreter.
Batch File
The process of transmitting data via infrared devices. Transferred data is accordingly stored on the receiving device.
Beaming
An internal autonomous system standard. It is the protocol used among various Internet Service Providers.
BGP, Border Gateway Protocol
A variation of the DNS. Currently the mostly widely used server of it’s kind of the web.
BIND
An internal application used by a computer’s microprocessor. It purposes is to function the machine after it has been turned on.
BIOS
A strategy used for signaling on the T-carrier system. It’s main purpose is to transmit voice and data in digital form.
Bit Robbing
Lists of mail accounts a user does not want to receive messages from. These messages may be unsolicited or spam.
Blacklist
A unique security threat that applies several different infecting techniques. Exploitation may come in the form of detecting a system’s vulnerability or strictly infecting files.
Blended Threat
A key cipher that functions on a fixed length of bits. The results of a block cipher are unvarying.
Block Cipher
A particular host or location that has been blocked and cannot communicate with potential recipients. This process is typically initiated by a FireWall application.
Blocked Host
The section of a disk that contains instructions to run a program or computer. The boot record may be stored on a hard or floppy disk
Boot Record
An infection that corrupts a boot record. Infection may also spread to the Master Boot Record
Boot Sector Infector
A computer program that roams the internet in search of information. Bots typically retrieve information and send it to a specific location
Bot
A malicious self-replicating application. It typically hides in the memory of a computer.
Bot Worm
The term is short for robot network. Botnet is mostly known for commanding other machines to seize control of computers from a remote location
Botnet
A mechanism that connects local area networks to one another. Ethernet and Token Ring are prime examples of a bridge.
Bridge
To simultaneously send forth a program to a number of recipients. A broadcast typically represents the transmission of radio or television
Broadcast
A dll module that adds functionality to Internet Explorer. Modules may include a variety of tool bars and menu objects
Browser Helper Object
A persistent method of hacking. In this instance, a hacker will implement every possible attack until successful
Brute Force
Status where a system or program is fed more data than it is capable of handling. A buffer overflow condition makes a system vulnerable to attack

A flaw found in software. Bugs typically have side effects that range from minimal to severe
