Archive
An archive typically stores files that have been packaged together for backup purposes, to transport files to another location, or for saving space in a storage unit. It may include individual files or those organized within a directory. In computers using the Windows operating system, WinZip is an application frequently used for creating an archive. WinZip has the ability to compress files in an archive to manage disk space, though compression is not required. In Unix-based environments, the Tar utility is used to create and extract files from an archive. In mainframe operating systems such as the IBM MVS, archiving procedures are usually automated for daily use. Many online web servers also contain archives. In this scenario, it may be referred to as a collection of individual publications that have been cataloged and made accessible to visitors. This may include blog postings, journals, and online newspapers that were previously published.
