Active X

Active X
The term was given by Microsoft to identify this set of object-orientated programming technology. It’s primary technology is called the COM (Component Object Model). When used in an environment that contains a network and additional support, the COM becomes the DCOM (Distributed Component Object Model). The component that enables it to run programs in different operating systems is known as an Active X control. This is very similar to a Java applet in function. Components have many advantages because they can be reused by many different programs. An Active X control can be created using various scripting languages and tools such as Visual Basic, PowerBuilder or VBScript. The very benefits of Active X has also prompted security issues. Malicious code writers have taken advantage of the script by launching viruses, spyware and other infections onto the computers of unsuspecting users. Active X is mainly used on Windows and Macintosh operating systems. Microsoft plans to support the script on Unix-like systems in the near future.
